ArtWatch International is a non-profit 501(c)3 incorporated in the state of New York in 1992 as an international advocate for the voice of art in the conservation and stewardship of historically significant works. It was founded by Columbia University art historian Professor James Beck to serve as a watchdog organization in the arena of cultural policy, protecting works of art and the public interest from vested private and institutional interests. We operate on a project by project basis, establishing task forces to determine the levels and methods of engagement in specific conservation, restoration and cultural policy issues and problems. Some problems have been addressed through scholarly work and publications, other through advisory and consulting arrangements, still others by symposia, debate, lecture forums, and intensive work with the media.

Modern Restoration & the Renovated Crucifix in the Duomo of Crema
At the risk of appearing obvious, it occurs to me that there are three categories of modern restoration which are effectively operative for paintings and sculptures: (1) those for the art trade and private collectors (2) those for museums and public collections (3) those produced for a specific religious purpose, in churches and chapels. In […]
Critique on Restoration Methods
A word on the practice of removing old restorations on paintings. One of the least defensible and intellectually questionable concepts raised in the often vitriolic debates surrounding art restoration practice over the past few decades is that of “readability.” A a vague and shifting goal, it continues to be advocated, especially by the museums and […]
At Risk: Buddhist Art in Afghanistan
Ancient statues of the Buddha in the war-torn country of Afghanistan are under threat. Reports hit the international media on Saturday that prior threats by the Taliban authorities of Afghanistan to destroy all of the statues within that nation were being summarily carried out. Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban supreme leader, first initiated the order […]

By James Beck Should churches charge admission fees to see art? The recent decision by the city of Florence, with the approval of the Superintendent of Fine Arts (Soprintendente ai beni artistici) of Florence Dr. Antonio Paolucci together with church authorities to charge admission to visit Santa Maria Novella has raised a host of questions […]
Debunking the “Have You Seen It?” Myth
By James Beck It took me too many years to arrive at a fundamental realization regarding the modern restoration industry, its various branches, subdivisions, and operatives. Underlying much of the activity is, of course, money, a factor that I had understood from the very start of my own involvement in the issues fifteen years […]
Masaccio’s Trinity: The Tyranny of the Fragment
Masaccio, Trinity with the Virgin, Saint John the Evangelist, and Donors, c. 1425-27/28. Church of Santa Maria Novella (Florence). The Direction of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence graciously permitted me to visit the ongoing restoration of Masaccio’s Trinity, in Santa Maria Novella, on Thursday August 31st, 2000. In interviews published in Florentine […]
On Traveling Exhibitions
The business of exhibitions puts masterpieces at risk. In recent months a controversy has re-erupted in the press and among art experts in Italy which is gradually spilling onto the international scene. Its impact upon the habits of displaying art treasures cannot be underestimated. The influential, skillful and politically adept Soprintendente of Fine Arts of […]
Reversibility? “Science”? A Word on Current Restoration Methods
Current restoration materials and practices are not as benign as the practitioners would have us believe. Our visual heritage is being tampered with daily while the intellectual community has remained silent over the results. I have difficulty comprehending the reluctance with which philosophers, art scholars, historians, writers, filmmakers, novelists and poets have approached or, better, […]
